Wide receiver Chad Ochocinco was officially released Thursday afternoon by the New England Patriots, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.

Ochocinco was signed by the Patriots last year to become a dangerous threat to opposing defenses. Instead, he ended up having the worst season of his career and was unable to follow the team's scheme.

The Patriots gave him one more chance during the off-season, but he has struggled with the scheme, which has led to his release.

The Patriots tried trading him, but were unable to find any suitors by the transaction deadline at 4 PM.

Ochocinco later had this to say on Twitter:

The question is now...where does Chad head next?
