The World Boxing Council (WBC) announced on Feb. 29 that British-based boxer Dereck Chisora has been banned indefinitely from fighting for the organization and he will be removed from its rankings. The WBC handed down the punishment following the Zimbabwean-born boxer’s unsportsmanlike behavior before and after his recent loss to WBC Heavyweight Champion Vitali Klitschko in Munich, Germany on Feb. 18.

Chisora slapped his opponent during the weigh in and then spit water and Klitschko’s younger brother Wladimir while the fighters were being introduced in the ring. To make matters worse, Chisora then started a brawl in the post-fight press conference with recently-retired British heavyweight David Haye. The fight produced a few cuts and bruises and Chisora said Haye hit him with a bottle. Haye can be seen in photographs punching Chisora while holding a bottle in his right hand, but it’s unclear if he hit him with it. Chisora then said he would shoot Haye.

The 28-year-old Chisora and his manager were stopped from leaving Munich airport following the brawl and taken to police headquarters for questioning. Haye escaped the country and while Chisora was arrested, he was finally released and went back to England. Haye hasn’t been questioned by German police, but stated on English television that he acted in self defense.

Frank Warren, Chisora’s promoter, told the press that the WBC ban was outrageous because there hasn’t been a disciplinary hearing on the incidents. Warren said he doesn’t condone what happened outside of the ring, but there were a lot of things going on behind the scenes and his boxer deserves a fair hearing. He said Chisora isn’t a WBC champion, so it’s easy for them to ban him. He also mentioned that Chisora apologized publicly for his actions where he admitted they were inexcusable.

Warren added that several mobile cameras and videotapes ended up in the hands of the police and they should be examined for evidence. He also pointed out that Chisora hasn’t been charged by the police as of yet and has already been fined about $100,000 by the German Professional Boxing Federation for his actions toward the Klitschkos. However, the WBC said the boxer had committed some of the worst behaviour ever seen in the sport and he will have to undergo anger management treatment before being allowed to fight for the organization again.

The WBC didn’t mention Haye since he’s currently unlicensed and they don’t have any jurisdiction over him. Both Haye and Chisora won’t be fighting in Germany again since the German Boxing Federation have banned them. However, the WBC ban might not really affect Chisora since it’s highly unlikely he’ll get another shot at a WBC title. In fact he might not be fighting in Britain either anytime soon since he has to meet with the British Boxing Board of Control on March 14.

The WBC said it will hold a hearing into Chisora’s actions and it may impose a heavy fine on him as well. Warren said what happened out of the ring was unacceptable, but added that Mike Tyson bit Lennox Lewis’ leg at a WBC press conference while rolling on the floor years ago and Muhammad Ali went at it with Joe Frazier in another incident and neither of those boxers were banned. Warren said he wouldn’t have a problem with the punishment as long as a proper hearing had taken place where Chisora could try to defend himself.
