After tip-toeing around the free agent waters, the Jets have finally made a splash, reinforcing an area of need with one of the better players left on the open market.

Per multiple reports, the Jets signed safety LaRon Landry to a one-year, $4 million contract Monday.

It’s unclear how the deal is structured, but it almost certainly includes incentives and a clause against injury.

Landry, while supremely talented, is also somewhat brittle (as hard as that is to believe), having missed 15 games over the last two seasons with an Achilles-tendon issue.

The No. 6 overall pick in 2007, Landry has established himself as a true in-the-box safety, using an ungodly mix of speed and strength to wreak havoc off of the edges.

However, Landry is a liability in coverage and isn’t the centerfield-type of ballhawk the Jets are still searching for. And they’re not going to find it in cornerback Antonio Cromartie, who offered to make the move Sunday night.

Nevertheless, if he can avoid the injury bug, this will be a significant upgrade for Gang Green, as they may no longer have to trot Eric Smith onto the field in base packages … music to the ears of each and every Jets fan.
