Super middleweight Adonis Stevenson dropped Don George five times in their IBF elimination bout at the Bell Centre in Montreal, Canada on Oct. 12 on his way to a 12th-round KO. The win saw Stevenson raise his record to 19-1 with 16 KOs while George fell to 23-3-1 with 20 KOs.
Stevenson, who was born in Haiti, but now makes Montreal his home, decked George of Chicago, Illinois, for the first time in the fifth round. George got up and started to fight back, but soon found himself on the canvas again before the round was over. After picking himself up for the second time he went toe to toe with Stevenson until the bell ended the exciting round.
It didn’t take long for Stevenson to impose his will again as he had George back on the ring deck again the very next round. George showed that he has a lot of heart and wasn’t about to quit after being dropped for a third time and got back to his feet once again.
He managed to stay upright until the 12th and final round when Stevenson sent him crashing to the mat for the fourth and fifth times. Referee Marlon Wright then called a halt to the bout at the 55-second mark of the round.
Stevenson, a southpaw, dominated the bout, but George refused to quit even though he took some punishing blows to both the body and head. After the bout George said he never thought about quitting since it’s not in his genes.
He said a professional boxer has to deal with highs and lows in their careers and even though he was hurt about 20 times in the fight he never thought about packing it in and never will while he’s getting paid to fight.
Stevenson, who’s now 35 years old, controlled the bout with his jab, excellent footwork, and punching power. George said Stevenson surprised him with his boxing style and tactics. He admitted that he thought the two would just slug it out at the opening bell, but Stevenson boxed more and had an excellent game plan in place.
George’s best moment of the fight came early on. He threw a succession of right hands to the head of Stevenson with a couple of them managing to get through and stun his opponent. However, he didn’t do much damage other than that.
He admitted that he didn’t think he hurt Stevenson with his punches even though he managed to momentarily stun him several times. He added that he hit Stevenson as hard as he could, but he has an excellent chin.
Stevenson might have caused more damage to George if he didn’t hurt his left hand early in the bout. Still, his body shots were brutal and George said he thinks he suffered a couple of broken ribs on the night. Stevenson may now get a shot at 35-year-old IBF Super Middleweight Champion Carl Froch of England sometime in 2013.
