Wayne Ellington January 2013

In order to save themselves money and avoid the luxury tax, the Memphis Grizzlies have completed a trade that will send Josh Selby, Wayne Ellington and Marreese Speights to the Cleveland Cavaliers for Jon Leuer and a first-round draft pick, according to CBS Sports.

The trade will save the Grizzlies around $4 million, which means they don’t need to do a big move like trading Rudy Gay or Zach Randolph for luxury tax concerns now.

Ellington averaged 5.5 points, shooting 41-percent from the field in 17 minutes.  In trading Ellington, the Grizzlies are giving away one of the few guys that was able to space the floor, something they have been struggling with all season long.

Speights came to Memphis last January and did a solid job filing in for Randolph and Darrell Arthur when they were out due to injury. Speights’ numbers have fallen this season due to Randolph's and Arthur’s return, however.

The Grizzlies drafted Selby with the 49th overall pick in the 2011 NBA Draft. He played in only 38 total games since being drafted and averaged 2.2 points per game for his career.

Memphis has received Leuer , who has averaged 4.4 points per game along with 2.4 rebounds per game in 55 career games.
