The Oklahoma City Thunder traded guard Eric Maynor to the Portland Trail Blazers on Thursday’s trade deadline, freeing up a roster spot as the third-string point guard. According to ESPN, the Thunder will be signing guard Derek Fisher for the rest of the season.

Fisher started last season with the Los Angeles Lakers, but they then traded him to the Houston Rockets for forward Jordan Hill in at the deadline. Fisher was waived by the Rockets and landed in Oklahoma City for the rest of the season.

After his contract wasn’t picked up by the team, Fisher remained a free agent and didn’t join anyone until the Dallas Mavericks signed him in late November, but only to ask for his release after playing nine games with them.

Fisher suffered a knee injury and wanted to return to his family and recover in Los Angeles. The 38-year-old averaged 8.6 points and 3.5 assists in 25 minutes per game with the Mavs.

Despite Fisher’s age, I think this is a good move by the Thunder. Fisher shouldn’t play many minutes, and he is an excellent leader and veteran that will help the team, especially backup point guard Reggie Jackson with his position. And if any guard get injured, it’s nice to know you have another player that has seen it all.
