Carolina Panthers general manager Dave Gettleman is shooting down reports he has already begun laying the groundwork for potential coaching candidates, and called the rumor “unequivocally false.” Sunday morning, reports came out that the Panthers had already started the process to replace Ron Rivera as head coach.

From ESPN:

Gettleman denied the initial NFL Network report, via David Newton of ESPN.com, who said the G.M. was “adamant” it was not the case.

If he’s to be taken at his word, and there’s no reason to believe he’s lying, the Panthers are simply making a mistake.
Of course Gettleman is lying. He didn’t hire Rivera, and I’m sure he had a list of coaching candidates when he accepted the job as GM, and probably has always spent some time doing his due-diligence for a potential coaching change.

I mean, we’re talking about the Panthers here.
