jay-feaster-flames-2013The Calgary Flames have relieved general manager Jay Feaster of his duties, effective immediately. Also relieved is assistant general manager John Weisbrod.

Feaster served as assistant general manager to Darryl Sutter, and took over in the interim role after Sutter’s resignation in December of 2010. Feaster took over as general manager permanently in May of 2011. Less than a year later, Sutter took over as head coach of the Los Angeles Kings and guided them to the Stanley Cup.

The Flames played competitive hockey after Feaster initially took over as general manager. They finished in second place in the Northwest Division in 2010-11 and 2011-12, but did not make the playoffs either season. The Flames last qualified for the playoffs in the 2008-09 season.

Last season saw the Flames fall off the map, as Calgary finished 19-25-4 — good for sixth-worst in the NHL. This year, the Flames are fifth-worst in the NHL with a record of 11-15-4.

This is clearly still a rebuilding phase for Calgary, and apparently president Brian Burke has better ideas as to who should be doing the building.

Brian Burke will now be serving as the interim GM. Burke has served as general manager for Hartford, Vancouver, Anaheim and most recently, Toronto.
