Sometimes the people with all the power know less about what’s really going on out here.

A California high school football coach has been relieved of his duty, after he appeared in a rap music video, the Los Angeles Times reported.

Otis Newell, a father of two whose wife in the same school district, was fired as the defensive coordinator at Simi Valley High School because the district objected to his portrayal of a drug dealer operating out of an ice cream truck in a rap video.

Another coach who saw the hip-hop video, titled “U Need It, I Got It,” went to officials to complain.

Newell, raised in the Watts section of Los Angeles, explained that the depiction is what he saw as a youth.

“It’s a depiction of pretty much how I grew up, and there’s no secret that in the city where I come from, drugs and gang violence were everyday parts of my life,” he said.

Newell obviously isn’t living that lifestyle, having earned two college degrees, but that doesn’t seem to matter.

In an email Newell shared with outlets, the Simi Valley Unified School District stated that it was not questioning Newell’s character, but “cannot support” his appearance in the video.
