Welcome back to the “Greatest Ever” series as we continue with the ranks of the greatest big men in the history of the NBA!

The game of basketball has always been a sport of these walking giants whose abilities to dominate on the court can single handily turn your franchise into a championship contender. The league’s very first superstar was a center. His name was George Mikan, the old man on the right.

He simply proved the theory that the NBA has been and may still is a game of these giants who with time, just got better. They are generally a bunch of strong guys who can score inside the paint, grab a ton of rebounds, block shots and anchor the defense

The expectations are always off the reality, but when you’re great, nothing less than a success is expected, so it kinda gets hard on them. Although they have some similarities, they are different from each other and have their own kind of domination

It’s best to build based on these players who are the biggest reasons for the championship runs since the beginning of the league. The Celtics had Bill Russell,Dave Cowens and Robert Parish. Then their rivals, LA, had Kareem, Shaq, Mikan and so on.

They possess different styles. There are big men who rely on their strength and athleticism, but there are some who use their skills and finesse to establish as a strong presence on the court. Most of the members of the list are part of the Greatest Of All Time debate.

There’s a young group of so-so promising centers these days led by Howard that are ready to do what these players did years ago. I cannot wait to see that.

In the end, these legends are judged based on their abilities, how they contributed for their team’s overall success, wins, resume, championships, legacy, impact etc. Even the little things matter.  Here are the finest big men to ever play in the NBA History!

Second Tier Of Big Men

Patrick Ewing

One of the greatest big men in the NBA History, Patrick Ewing can be described with the word ‘warrior’.

That’s right. He was an elite center who was one of the most skilled players at his position ever. This is supported by the fact that he is the Knicks all time leader in points, rebounds, blocks and steals.

Ewing was a remarkable force on the court, largely because of his superb physical gifts, size and skill set which allowed him to dominate out there. Until the knee injuries really hurt him, he was at one point the best center in the game.

Patrick was a very capable offensive player, who was known to be one of the most elite jump shooting big men to step on hardwood. He could score well from the post, yet still hit the mid range shots and was a guy who shot over 50% for his career.

He managed to establish himself as one of the finest defenders of any time. He’s one of the top shot blockers to play the game, who was a good one on one stopper and pretty elite presence out there.

However, there’s one thing he’s known for and that’s toughness. In my opinion, no one was more tougher than him. He battled through numerous challenges such as health issues and so on. He always played well.

He’s a legend, despite being one of the best not to win it all.

Nate Thurmond

An outstanding center who was a recognizable force on the court and underrated legend, Nate “The Great” Thurmond was one of the best big men in the NBA History.

He was arguably the greatest defender of all time. Thurmond relied on his superior physical gifts, used his skills, attitude and mentality to dominate on this side. He got to be a superstar because of that.

He’s arguably the top one on one stopper to step on hardwood. He slowed down players like Wilt, Kareem and many others from scoring. In fact, because of his work on Jabbar and Chamberlain, he gets his respect for defense which is deserved,

Nate intimated them and hall others for his work. He was one of the finest shot blockers of all time. Some say he could block more shots than Hakeem, which is a prove of just how good he was.

He was also one of the most consistent and elite rebounders to play the game of basketball. He additionally averaged six seasons of 20+ rebounds, ranks top five in both total and average etc. He was quite a presence.

Thurmond was a good offensive player, despite having a low career field goal percent. He could play well in the paint, had a reliable mid range shot, was a fine pick settler and was decent passer.

He was real good, but he’s underrated which is shame.

Elvin Hayes

Some players spent years in the league before they could truly shine, however this guy certainly didn’t. Elvin Hayes is one of the greatest big men in the NBA History.

He was one of the most talented power forwards to play the game, as he showed the fans of what he’s capable even in the pros as he started in a way few have had.

Hayes was one of the most dominant players of all time. He dominated on offense as he had great arsenal to score, was a presence on the court and was a great interior stopper as well.

He was one of the finest offensive forces in the history of the game. The Big E had one of the most sweetest signature moves, had a nice mid range shot and was a good post up player too. He ranks top 10 in total points scored, which is amazing.

He was one of the top interior stoppers of all time. He was a great presence on defense, who excelled in shot blocking, was a great one on one stopper because of his skills and length.

The E was a talented player. He had a filled resume, but he only lacked a championship. However that all changed when he won a title in 1978 and he averaged 20/10 in it.

The resume why he’s knocked down of the debate for the biggest 20-25 legends is because of his behavior. Similar like Zach Randolph in the non Memphis years, he was selfish and a douche.

Still, he’s not the only one though. He shouldn’t be knocked down for this. He’s amazing.

Hakeem Olajuwon

A force in the middle on both ends of the court, Hakeem Olajuwon is another strong candidate for the honor of the greatest big man of all time

He was a phenomenal player who had a very raw combination of athleticism, speed and strength which was a big factor in his dominance. He also had variety of post moves inside to go with numerous fakes, which all became known as the “Dream Shake”

He had a nice jump shot from 18 feet as well and was one of the best defenders in the history of the league, and a case can be made for being on top as well. He not only could put his man on low percent from field, but block shots, get steals and clear the glass

During his peak, he played with some good competition, which included David Robinson, Patrick Ewing and Shaquille O’Neal and beat them all. He’s the top off-ball and help defender the game has ever seen and could block nearly four shots a game with at least two steals.

He was a dominant presence on the court which is undeniable, but his strength remains the work he did on defense which is absolutely terrific. He led everyone twice in rebounding, three times in blocks and from a little bit in 4 categories in total for a season

He always raised his game in the playoffs and the most impressive fact of his career that for a big man he was ranked at No.9 overall, that’s so impressive and he was one of the few players ever to average at least 25 points and 11 rebounds in the playoffs history.

That was an attempt that most teams used to stop him since he has been a bad free throw shooter since day one and that was used by teams because it is his biggest weakness.

He’s one of the best rebounders of all time, who always cleared the glass well, especially during the clutch time and one of the most overlooked defenders and top shot blockers as well. He’s overlooked largely duo to his laziness
