It looks like the lights will be out for veteran outside linebacker Shawne Merriman, as ESPN reports that he was released by the Buffalo Bills Monday.

With two-a-days over, the Bills made the announcement in a sentence news release as they begin more practices. The release comes to a bit of a surprise after much praise from the Bills' staff about Merriman possibly going back to his form of old when he was an All-Pro with the San Diego Chargers.

Merriman was once considered one of the best pass-rushers in the game until a steroids scandal and several off-the-field issues derailed his once-valuable career. The Bills still kept their faith, hoping this project with Merriman could somehow be successful. It was just time to pull the trigger.

Buffalo still has two pass-rushers to fill the outside linebacker spots with Mario Williams, who signed a six-year, $100 million deal with Buffalo this off-season. They also signed Mark Anderson.

We'll see what happens next to Merriman's career with this recent news.
