The Santa Clara County District Attorney has charged NFL free agent defensive tackle Ray McDonald with felony false imprisonment stemming from the domestic violence incident that got him released from the Chicago Bears this offseason.

“It is unconscionable and illegal for any woman to be trapped, whether it be behind a dining room table or in a relationship filled with fear and violence,” Deputy District Attorney James Demertzis said in a statement.

McDonald allegedly assaulted his then-fiancee as she was holding their two-month old baby, and has also been charged with misdemeanor domestic violence, child endangerment and with violating a court order that he stay away from the woman.

McDonald is looking at three years in prison if found guilty.
