Former Notre Dame quarterback Malik Zaire is transferring to Florida. Zaire will join the Gators as a graduate transfer after the SEC changed its rules regarding graduate transfers at last week’s league meetings.

“You just want to be able to be a part of something special,” Zaire said. “You’re playing in basically like a minor league from The League. For me, I didn’t want the challenge to dissipate at the end of the day.

“Coming from Notre Dame, you’re playing top games every week, and I wanted to continue that trend. I didn’t want to run from the challenge, I wanted to embrace the challenge.”

The 6-foot, 225-pound Zaire was the Fighting Irish starting quarterback at the beginning of the 2015 season, but was knocked out for the season with a broken ankle in Week 2.

He lost his job to DeShone Kizer, who was just drafted by the Cleveland Browns. In 15 games at Notre Dame, Zaire completed 59.2 percent of his passes for 816 yards and six touchdowns with no interceptions.
