Designing a gym takes much more than just figuring out how to layout the equipment, despite what you think.

The Right Space

Do you want to implement cross-training into what you offer or the programs at your gym? If you have plans to install high rigs to hang gym rings off for muscle-ups, it may be smart to avoid the studio in the middle of the city. 

Instead, look in areas where there are multi-purpose or industrial zones. This will ensure that space and height aren’t an issue.

Customer Focused Design

Have you always had the dream to be a gym owner? If so, that’s a great starting point. However, it would help to consider what your customers are looking for. 

Just because you want to build muscle and focus exclusively on this doesn’t mean everyone else does. Be sure the design of your gym suits the people who will be using it.

Equipment Needs

Are you going to offer group classes? If so, consider setting up unique stations to help maximize your capacity, all while you reduce your upfront costs. 

For example, if you plan to have a group of 12, it doesn’t mean you have to purchase 12 of the same items. 

Instead of doing this, consider buying items in multiples of four. This will allow you to have three classes that are rotating around every station. 

This is especially beneficial if you have a limited budget but don’t want to compromise the quality of the machines.

If you have equipment that will be used for general training or private sessions, you can start with one. This will let you see how much demand there is for that equipment. As you grow and demand grows, you can purchase additional machines.

If you have a small space or a limited budget, it’s a good idea to purchase versatile machines instead of equipment that will isolate a single body part and take up a lot of room.

The Gym Layout

It’s best to separate your equipment into different areas or zones in your gym. Some of the areas you may want to create include an area for boxing, group training, stretching, abs, functional training, free weights, cable machines, and cardio.

Along with planning the layout to avoid confusion, it will also help with managing traffic while helping you avoid cases of overcrowding. 

It would help if you also had an area near the entrance of your gym with lockers or other places where your members can put their personal items.

Maximize Floor Space

An effective way to get the most out of your new gym is by using all the available surfaces. What this means is that you think vertically. 

Take time to get your gear up and off the floor. Install it on the walls. While this may require a slightly larger investment, it is more than worth it. 

This will provide more floor space and help ensure that your equipment is stored the right way. It also reduces potential trip hazards, which is something you have to stay mindful of.
