The Philadelphia Eagles signed Nnamdi Asomugha, thus winning the sweepstakes for the most prized free agent available in this class. According to ESPN reports, the two sides have agreed to a five-year, $60 million contract.

The Eagles were rumored to be in the discussion months ago for the 3-time Pro Bowl cornerback, but talks dissolved when the lockout was lifted.

Teams such as the Houston Texans and San Francisco 49ers were heavily involved in talks but up till the moment of the official breaking news, it seemed as if it had come down to the New York Jets and Dallas Cowboys. But once that 6 p.m. EST mark was reached, it was made official. Nnamdi Asomugha is a member of the Philadelphia Eagles.

Note, the Eagles acquired Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie as a part of their Kevin Kolb trade. Moreover, cornerback Asante Samuel is one of the highest paid players on their roster.

Heading into the offseason, acquiring another quality starting corner was one of their top priorities. And now they’ve added two.

The three mentioned top-tier corners amount to eight Pro Bowls and would certainly give the Eagles the best trio of corners in the league, for now. The fact of the matter is that I find it hard to believe that they will retain Samuel.

Especially considering that DeSean Jackson, their explosive wide receiver, is looking for a new contract after outperforming his initial rookie deal. Jackson has already failed to report to training camp today, despite the new CBA rule that prevents him from holding out past August 11th, that’s definitely a situation they must fix.

And after dishing out a lucrative contract to Asomugha, I’m sure Jackson isn’t happy sitting at home left ignored.

Nevertheless, it’s clear that the Eagles have a Super Bowl on their mind. They’ve got a franchise quarterback in Michael Vick, a dynamic offense around him, and are building a very underrated defense. This puts them in immediate contention and this should be a very exciting season for the Eagles franchise.
