Kenny-Britt-Titans-vs-Texans

Tennessee Titans wide receiver Kenny Britt has had more than five run-ins with the law since being drafted in 2009.

Yahoo! Sports is reporting that Britt lost $675,000 in salary escalators after he was suspended for a game last season for those repeated run-ins with law enforcement.

The full story:

Britt’s five-year rookie contract was worth $9.15 million, but could reach a maximum of $12.25 million as Britt could earn up to $3.1 million in escalators to his 2013 base salary. During each of the first four seasons of the contract, Britt could add up to $775,000 to his 2013 salary through his production (65 receptions or 1,100 receiving yards or 15 touchdowns would add $700,00 to his 2013 salary) and individual honors ($75,000 for each year he made the Pro Bowl). The production levels mentioned above (65 catches, 1,110 yards, 15 touchdowns) were the ceiling as there were three lower levels that would allow Britt to add money to his 2013 base salary.

Britt would add $675,000 to his 2013 base salary by reaching the minimum reception requirement (41 receptions) in 2009, 2010 and 2012. Britt had 42 receptions in 2009 and 2010, and 45 catches in 2012, so he just barely reached the minimum. Throughout the offseason, Britt had been on the Titans’ books for a base salary of $1,572,500, but according to the NFLPA database, his salary is now back to the same $897,500 level it has been since the Titans exercised a $2.935 million option bonus in 2010.

That is a lot of contract language to digest.

I can see why he chose to stay out of New Jersey this off-season.
