After a solid performance in a 35-24 preseason loss versus the New York Giants, Geno Smith was officially named the starting quarterback of the Jets to open up the regular season.
Smith was named the starter over Michael Vick by head coach Rex Ryan on Friday, and it came to no one's surprise.
"I think he's taken off from where he left off [last season]," Ryan said,
via ESPN. "I expect great things in the future."
Smith went 9-of-14 for 137 yards and a touchdown against the Giants in that preseason game. With an upgraded offense for this season, many expect to see a much-more improved Smith on the field and the stat sheet.
From day one though, Smith was considered the starter all along. Between he and Vick, it was never really a competition. Vick had his sights the whole time on backing up Smith.
"All along, I've had the notion that I'd be out there Week 1," said Smith. "The handwriting was pretty much on the wall. It's a big deal, but nothing will change. It's the same mindset for me."
We'll see if Smith can perform well, otherwise don't be surprised if we see Vick coming in a few weeks into the regular season.
