Michael Sam has reached his ceiling as a football player, and that’s okay.

Sam worked hard and turned himself into an All-American pass rusher at Missouri. That ability didn’t translate to the next level.

Sam is now walking away from the Canadian Football League (CFL) and the Montreal Alouettes for a second time — likely for good.

From his Twitter:

I believe Sam rode the wave of being the first openly gay player drafted into the NFL about as far as he could. Once the conversation about his sexuality stopped, Sam just became a tweener and not talented enough to make an NFL roster.

Sam is now citing mental health concerns as his reason for stepping away, and he should rest up and seek counsel if that truly is the case.
