When the temperature drops, it’s tempting to throw on your pajamas and stay in bed all day. Although drinking hot cocoa or cider in the warm indoors sounds exciting, so does snowboarding, ice skating, and ice racing!

There are many ways you can appreciate the outdoors during the winter, including the following winter sports. Try something new this year and challenge yourself to these winter sports everyone should try at least once in their lifetime.

Winter Hiking

Before we see our first glimpse of snowfall, don’t be afraid to go outside and explore the nature around you.

Hiking during the colder months is a treat because you won’t get hot as easily, and you get to see the beautiful foliage as the weather changes from fall to winter against the gray sky.

However, if you decide to go hiking after it snows or rains, wear the appropriate running shoes to keep your feet warm and protect the traction under them.

Ski Biking

You’ve heard of skiing or snowboarding, but have you heard of ski biking? If you’ve ever gone mountain biking, let us introduce you to the colder cousin.

Instead of wheels, you will use mini skis to help you navigate through the snow. Dig your skis into the snow to break or slow down! It takes time to get used to it, so it’s best to start on smaller slopes.

Once you’ve gained your confidence, you can try steeper routes.

Ice Skating

Ice skating is a winter sport everyone should try this year! While most of us aren’t pro-figure skaters, there’s nothing wrong with just remaining upright on the blades.

As you master balancing and basic skating skills, you can experiment with a few tricks, like spins or figure eights! Whether you’re 16 or 65, ice skating is a great activity that’s enjoyable and gets the body moving.

Ice Fishing

If you’re looking for a more relaxing activity, you should go ice fishing this winter. Ice fishing is when you fish with a line and hook through a hole in the thick ice.

Don’t worry about sitting out all day in the cold because some areas offer heated enclosures! This is a great opportunity to turn your phone off and enjoy the nature around you—ice and all.

Ice Racing

Ice racing is an exciting sport that’s the definition of living for thrill. This sport involves driving 4x4s, motorbikes, or cars on frozen lakes and snowy tracks.

While this activity may sound too thrilling for some, experienced ice racing organizers will ensure your safety by measuring the ice-to-snow ratio.

However, don’t go out and go racing yourself; stay up-to-date with the AMEC for ice racing events.
